She may be an A-list celebrity well-versed in the art of getting ready for big events, but Scarlett Johansson looks forward to pampering and preparing herself for winter’s string of parties just as much as the rest of us.

“There’s kind of a therapy to it – get in the shower, shave your legs, put on your lotion and so on. I hate to rush. Luckily my partner [French journalist Romain Dauriac] is really into getting ready also, so he’s good at giving me time. I’ll lock myself away to get ready and he knows to give me my 45 minutes,” Johansson told us. “I like to listen to music and I have a really nice dressing area, with a vanity and everything. For work it’s a different thing as you’ve got whole hair and make-up teams there, but by myself the whole process can be quite relaxing.”

We’re talking to Johansson on the phone in New York, where she’s celebrating her thirtieth birthday with friends this weekend. According to the actress, the plan is to “drink a bunch of champagne, eat a cupcake, dance and pass out by 11pm,” though, as a new mother to two-month-old Rose, she says her goal is “keeping my eyes open until 1am”. Christmas itself will be an altogether more relaxed affair, spent with her family “in pyjamas all day” playing games and eating Christmas dinner together followed by a lunch the following day. Holiday parties she plans to attend range from friends’ ugly sweater parties to more formal affairs hosted by what Johansson sweetly describes as “work colleagues” but the rest of us might refer to as “Hollywood stars”. Refreshingly though, she has a very practical attitude as to what to wear – albeit with a little more Dolce & Gabbana on tap than the rest of us thanks to her role as an ambassador for the fragrance and make-up lines.

“It’s so freezing in New York that I usually wear trousers for formal parties, though this year I want to wear more dresses with tights. I’m going to make some serious investments at Wolford. I don’t know why New Yorkers don’t wear tights as much as British people, I guess it’s a cultural thing? But why wouldn’t you when it’s so cold?” she mused. “Then a red lipstick always makes me feel good. Dolce & Gabbana’s holiday make-up collection is just the kind of make-up I’d wear for Christmas – it’s very glamorous and festive. And I wear But the Classic Cream Lipstick in Devil is my favourite, it’s the perfect red – not too blue and not too orange. I wore it in my first campaign for Dolce & Gabbana but it’s still the one I wear most. Dolce’s reds are all great, I think that’s Pat’s influence.”

The “Pat” she casually refers to is of course Pat McGrath, make-up artist extraordinaire and creative design director of Procter & Gamble Beauty, which licences Dolce & Gabbana’s fragrance portfolio and make-up.

“Pat is great at very bold looks – she’s taught me that you don’t have to do an eye or a lip exclusively, if you wear both together in the right way then it doesn’t have to be too much. It’s one thing if you apply it all really heavy-handedly, but if your skin looks really fresh then why not?” she said. “I’m so fortunate to work with such amazing people. They teach you these clever techniques but when you go to try it out yourself it never looks quite the same! I love make-up though, I have done since I was a little girl. My mom had this beautiful make-up collection and I’d sit and watch her get ready. I do enjoy it. Unlike hair, which I’m useless at.”

Something tells us that she is better at it than she lets on, but Johansson does seem to have a refreshingly laid-back and dare we say normal approach to how she looks for someone constantly in the spotlight, and lacks the barrier that some of her fellow celebrities have against revealing any information which could make them appear less than perfect.

“I’ve always liked a glamorous look for both clothes and make-up but in everyday life I’m much less va va voom and much more androgynous. More functional. I see girls who have that whole rockabilly thing going on with the hair and the make-up and I really admire that, but wow it’s like a full-time job,” she confided. “I don’t wear full foundation on my days off either. I can have problematic skin – I have to wear so much make-up for work, so it gets tired. My worst habit is probably looking at my skin too closely in a magnifying mirror – I’m awful, I can turn something really small into a massive lesion, I just can’t stop picking at it. The thing I try to do is to cleanse religiously – I generally use Cetaphil or something else really gentle and non-comodegenic. For moisturiser I really like Shu Uemura or Shiseido.”

Just hours after our conversation ends, Johansson is back on the red carpet in New York, hosting a Hurricane Sandy benefit with her brother Hunter. She wears a slim band alongside her enormous Art Deco engagement ring, sparking rumours that she and Dauriac have married in secret. The news makes headlines all over the world. She herself may have a relaxed approach to how she appears, but we’re all just as fascinated as ever.

Scarlett Johansson, you may have heard, recently gave birth to a baby girl, Rose. But, upon seeing the actress — who turns 30 today — in person, we noticed one life change that took immediate precedent (yes, even over childbirth).

“I think I just got tired of wearing a ponytail all the time,” she says, smoothing back the freshly-buzzed sides of the haircut she debuted over the summer. “I [was] always stuffing it under a wig, so I just cut it off. Everybody kept saying, ‘Don’t cut your hair! You might hate it!’ But, then I thought, Why am I letting other people tell me what to do? ”

The low-maintenance style is perfect for the new mother. “I can just wash and go,” she says.

It turns out, this no-fuss philosophy applies to all things beauty in the actress’ life. “I’ve never had a crazy routine,” she says. And, after giving birth, she’s realized just how precious free time is. “I’m on somebody else’s schedule,” she says. But, she’s quick to add: “It’s hard for…any parent with a new kid. Your brain is totally preoccupied. But, I’m very fortunate to have a job where I can take time off, and I can have my baby at work and people are more understanding. A lot of people don’t have that luxury.”

That makes those rare moments she does spend on herself even more crucial. “If I have a few minutes to transition from day to a holiday party, I’d probably use red lipstick,” she says, pointing to Dolce & Gabbana’s Lipstick in Real Red. (She’s currently a face of the brand.) “Then, maybe a couple lashings of mascara, and if I had the time, a little [cat-eye] flick. But, that would be it.”

She seems to put much more thought into her fragrances, alternating them based on roles she plays. For example, for her turn as Maggie in Broadway’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, “I wore a lot of old Southern fragrances, like magnolia and gardenia. I found this old company in New Orleans that does Victorian scents, and I wore them, and it actually makes a difference.”

For her, scent goes beyond embodying a character — which is refreshing to hear from someone who’s been endorsing luxury perfumes for a few years. “Fragrances are of a certain time,” she says. “Recently, my partner [Romain Dauriac] bought a bunch of fragrances his dad used to wear, like [Yves Saint Laurent] Jazz, and it’s crazy because they smell like a different era.”

And now, as a whirlwind year in the life of Scarlett Johansson comes to an end — an engagement, a baby, three major film roles, and many more projects in the pipeline — she may be entering a different era of her own, especially considering she’s reached a birthday milestone today. “My work has been sort of far-reaching in these past couple of years,” she says. “As an actor, I’ve learned to be more flexible…to take greater risks. I’ve learned that if you don’t take a risk with the choices you make, even in one particular scene, you never know what you could gain.”

She says, after a pause: “So, maybe I’m more accepting of failure. I would never know if I didn’t take the chance.”

All of this may sound like solid New Year’s-resolution material, but the actress says she doesn’t believe in such things. For the rest of us, there’s a great deal of inspiration to take from Scarlett, who’s clearly in charge of her career, her personal life, and even her own damn hair — all without the hint of a fumble. Yes, change can be a beautiful thing.

Scarlett Johansson is being lined up to star in the lead role for the upcoming, big screen adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, which is currently in the works. While some people were unsure whether Scarlett would be interested in taking on the role, it seems that there is a very big incentive for the actress.

It’s now been claimed that Scarlett Johansson will be offered an astounding $10m to take the offer of playing the lead role in the Ghost in the Shell movie, which may be a challenge for anybody to show. It becomes an absolute huge offer for any leading star nowadays, so we’d be very surprised if Scarlett was to turn the offer down, not that she needs the money.

For anyone who’re not really acquainted with Ghost in the Shell, it began as a seinen manga, until then being converted into and anime movie, starting with become a television series. The official description for the new Ghost in the Shell live action movie only reads, “A sci-fi story centered on a cyborg cop’ efforts to lower your a nefarious computer hacker.”

If Scarlett Johansson ended up being to accept the offer of $10m to experience the lead role in the Ghost in the Shell movie, then she’d be playing the character Major Motoko Kusanagi, who is seriously bad ass. Nevertheless there is not one other casting news surrounding the project, it is known that Rupert Sanders is on board to direct the film, in the screenplay that’s been adapted by William Wheeler.

She stepped away from her seat on “The View,” but Barbara Walters isn’t ready to give up her annual special reflecting on the year passed.

On Tuesday (October 21), the retired television personality revealed that she is set to host her “10 Most Fascinating People” special this year and unveiled a few of the featured names on her list.

“I was absolutely delighted when ABC approached me to do another year of ‘10 Most Fascinating People’,” Walters explained. “I know we said last year was our last, but there are just too many fascinating people out there… and you never pass up the opportunity to interview Oprah, Neil, Chelsea, or Scarlett.”

For 2014, Walters will feature Scarlett Johansson, Neil Patrick Harris, Oprah Winfey and Chelsea Clinton. The remaining list members will be announced soon.

Barbara started the show in 1993 and last year featured big names like Jennifer Lawrence, Miley Cyrus and Hilary Clinton.

As for her life post-retirement, Walters told ABC News that she is ready to enjoy her down time. “I have always had a schedule. I’ve always had deadlines. I’ve always had things to do. It will be nice to get up and say, ‘What do I have to do today? Nothing!'”
