Scarlett talks Mango
15 July, 2009

I look like a street, punky girl,” Scarlett Johansson tells me. “It’s that edgy Debbie-Harry- meets-Marianne-Faithfull look.”

Certainly the new images of Johansson for the autumn/winter 2009 Mango campaign, which hits the streets today, are a world away from the Scarlett that we’ve become used to.

Gone is the preppie, all-American girl of Lost in Translation, or the noir heroine of The Black Dahlia.

Johansson shot the ad campaign for the Spanish high-street fashion store with über-cool photographer Mario Sorrenti.

Hair styled in a tousled blonde bob, we see Scarlett wearing leather and leopardskin, super-skinny jeans and a black bra.

You wouldn’t mess with that girl. “She’s not a waif,” says Johansson proudly.

She takes over as the face of Mango from Penelope Cruz (who has fronted it for the past two years) and jokes she already knew a lot about the clothes from working with Cruz on Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona.

Pete Yorn talks ‘Break Up’
11 July, 2009

Austin360 posted a short interview with Pete Yorn.  It’s mostly about his current album Back and Forth but he did have a comment about his upcoming album with Scarlett and he hints at a possible tour (of sorts).

Is it fair to say your writing is more direct on the new songs? In the past, I’d maybe probably protect myself more by being vague. There was a conscious decision to make this more simple and straightforward.

Did that spill over into writing your upcoming album (‘Break Up’) with Scarlett (Johansson)? That was more like a flurry. I was trying to figure out how to get some female perspective in my songs.

Will you two tour together when that album’s out this fall? We’ll do a couple events. I think we’ll go to Europe as well.

Scarlett signs open letter to G8
9 July, 2009

A group of celebrities and dignitaries signed an open letter in Britain’s Daily Telegraph yesterday, urging the G8 to give all people – rich and poor in all countries – the support they need to live decent and dignified lives when they meet for the summit taking place in Italy.

Annie Lennox, Colin Firth, Scarlett Johansson, Angélique Kidjo, Bill Nighy and many others put their names to the letter, which will also appear in the UK’s Financial Times.

“You have a unique opportunity in Italy this year to ensure that all people, in rich countries and poor, are given the support they need to live decent and dignified lives,“ they wrote. “You have taken important steps to this end at previous G8 Summits. In 2001 you acknowledged that industrialized nations had a responsibility to tackle global inequality through deeper debt relief and more aid, and you agreed to establish a Global Fund for HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria. In 2005, you promised to increase annual aid levels to $50bn.
