Mary I of Scotland (Mary Stuart, better known as Mary, Queen of Scots; December, 1542 – February 8, 1587) was the Queen of Scots (the monarch of the Kingdom of Scotland) from December 14, 1542 to July 24, 1567. She also sat as Queen Consort of France from July 10, 1559 to December 5, 1560. The producers said the film would see Mary "battle political enemies, scheming allies, and affairs of the heart in her quest to reunite the warring tribes of her native Scotland."
Paramount Vantage is closing in on the domestic rights. Capitol Films and Relativity Media are financing, with Jimmy McGovern is penning the screenplay. The star's mother and manager Melanie Johansson will produce the film with Alexandra Milchan. The budget is expected to be in the $25 million-$30 million range.

Quotes: Scarlett Johansson |
• "I'm starting production for Mary Queen of Scots, which is kind of interesting, because it's some time later, but the same bloodline, of course. So I guess I'd be playing a distant cousin of myself or something. I have to think about that for a minute. It's a little bit twisted."
(said while promoting The Other Boleyn Girl)
• "I'm going to take over the whole of British history. A girl from New York - can you believe it?"
(said to Charles, the Prince of Wales)
