This week, Oxfam Ambassador Actress Scarlett Johansson visited Kenya to see the devastating impact of the drought in East Africa. More than 13 million people are at risk because of a severe drought that has hit parts of Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia. In Somalia, the crisis has escalated to a famine.
She visited the Dadaab refugee camp, where tens of thousands of Somali refugees have arrived:
“The scale of poverty in Dadaab is overwhelming,” said Johansson. “I met countless women like Hawa, a local community leader, who lamented the seemingly endless struggle of the Somali people, as refugees of war and starvation and now left to suffer everyday life with the very barest of essentials.
She also visited the Turkana region of northern Kenya, where communities suffer from chronic droughts that have destroyed their lives and livelihoods.
“This is a longterm and escalating crisis exacerbated by political conflict, famine and drought that can no longer be ignored. Over half the Somalis that have died are children; an entire generation lost. This is no longer an issue that can only garner some attention, some of the time. Extreme action must be taken by the global community now.”
An Oxfam Ambassador since 2004, Scarlett visited the region to see Oxfam’s life-saving work. Oxfam aims to reach 3.5 million people with emergency relief, as well as helping with long-standing threats to livelihoods and building the resilience of the communities where it works.

Scarlett Johansson is backing Scott Stringer to become mayor by hosting two hip fund-raisers for the Manhattan borough president.
The uptown and downtown events aim at two different voting groups on the same night. On Oct. 3, from 5:30 p.m., ScarJo will host a fete at the Plaza Hotel apartments, with tickets ranging from $2,500 to $10,000. Then, at 7 p.m., the “Lost in Translation” star will spearhead a party at Sean MacPherson’s hipster-favorite Jane Ballroom in the West Village, where tickets will go for $50 to $1,000.
Sources tell us the star will also film Web campaign ads for Stringer.
“Scott’s passion for New York is contagious,” she told us. “We share a love for this city’s diversity and culture. As a native New Yorker with a political history dedicated to community development, Scott’s priorities echo my own,” she said.
Moët muse Scarlett attended a sit-down dinner and after-party at the Peninsula Hotel in Shanghai (China) last night, to celebrate Moët’s century-long relationship with Asia. She was wearing a Marc Jacobs dress and looked fantastic! Check out some images:

These days, inviting a celebrity to the Marine Corps Ball has practically become as de riguer as combat boots and fatigues.
First, Mila Kunis accepted one Marine’s invite to the ball. Next, Justin Timberlake said yes to another, and then a slew of other stars (Betty White among them!) have been asked to go, as well.
The latest invitee, Scarlett Johansson, had to decline a video invitation from Sgt. Dustin L. Williams for the Nov. 10 ball, but she’s sending a bubbly replacement to accompany him to the fete.
“Sgt. Williams, unfortunately due to prior commitments I will not be able to attend the Ball with you this year but I am sending you a case of Moët and Chandon with gratitude,” the actress, 26, wrote in a statement to Zap2it.
“I feel incredibly honored,” she continued. “Not only does Sgt. Williams deserve recognition for his bravery, selflessness and dedication to the United States and its people, but also displays a cheeky talent for film making.”
“In my absence, I raise a glass to you and all the men and women of the U.S. Marine Corps, past and present, in thanks for your continued commitment to preserving the safety of our nation. – Scarlett”
It’s been seven whole years since we’ve had a new feature from British director Jonathan Glazer, but after several hiccups, it looks like his adaptation of Michael Faber‘s darkly comic sci-fi novel Under The Skin is finally gathering some momentum with production set to begin this October.
The casting of Scarlett Johansson late last year has surely helped Glazer’s cause—after all, the actress is taking on the salacious lead, described as “an alien on earth, disguised as a mesmerizing woman who uses her voracious sexuality to scour remote highways and desolate scenery to snare human prey.” We’re honestly just glad to see Glazer’s return behind the camera on a major feature film after the impressive combo of Sexy Beast and Birth.
