These days, inviting a celebrity to the Marine Corps Ball has practically become as de riguer as combat boots and fatigues.
First, Mila Kunis accepted one Marine’s invite to the ball. Next, Justin Timberlake said yes to another, and then a slew of other stars (Betty White among them!) have been asked to go, as well.
The latest invitee, Scarlett Johansson, had to decline a video invitation from Sgt. Dustin L. Williams for the Nov. 10 ball, but she’s sending a bubbly replacement to accompany him to the fete.
“Sgt. Williams, unfortunately due to prior commitments I will not be able to attend the Ball with you this year but I am sending you a case of Moët and Chandon with gratitude,” the actress, 26, wrote in a statement to Zap2it.
“I feel incredibly honored,” she continued. “Not only does Sgt. Williams deserve recognition for his bravery, selflessness and dedication to the United States and its people, but also displays a cheeky talent for film making.”
“In my absence, I raise a glass to you and all the men and women of the U.S. Marine Corps, past and present, in thanks for your continued commitment to preserving the safety of our nation. – Scarlett”
It’s been seven whole years since we’ve had a new feature from British director Jonathan Glazer, but after several hiccups, it looks like his adaptation of Michael Faber‘s darkly comic sci-fi novel Under The Skin is finally gathering some momentum with production set to begin this October.
The casting of Scarlett Johansson late last year has surely helped Glazer’s cause—after all, the actress is taking on the salacious lead, described as “an alien on earth, disguised as a mesmerizing woman who uses her voracious sexuality to scour remote highways and desolate scenery to snare human prey.” We’re honestly just glad to see Glazer’s return behind the camera on a major feature film after the impressive combo of Sexy Beast and Birth.
Under the Skin is based on a novel of the same name by Michel Faber who lives in the Black Isle, near Inverness.
The book tells of an alien, to be played by Johansson, who picks up hitchhikers on the A9 road in the Highlands to harvest body parts.
Dutch-born author Faber has insisted the movie adaption of his book also be set in the Highlands, according to the Press and Journal.
Jonathan Glazer is set to direct Under the Skin, which is scheduled for release in 2014.

Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson has signed up to star in a new film by John Carney, the Irish writer-director responsible for the hit 2006 indie musical film Once. The low-budget film made international names out of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova and was awarded an Oscar for best original song, which the couple performed at the Academy Awards ceremony.
The new film – called Can a Song Save Your Life? – will be executive produced by Judd Apatow, who was behind films such as Get Him to the Greek and Knocked Up. Although the male lead has not yet been cast, Mark Ruffalo and Jim Carrey have been rumoured as possible leads.
Scarlett Johannson is all smiles at Spike TV’s 2011 Guys Choice Awards held at Sony Pictures Studios on Saturday (June 4) in Culver City, Calif. She looked stunning in a Valentino dress and Jimmy Choo heels.
At the show, Scarlett exclusively told JustJared.com, “I just flew in from New Mexico, where I’ve been shooting The Avengers. A bunch of the cast is here tonight but I’m here to support the troops. Chris Evans and I are presenting. We’re right in the middle of scenes and figuring a lot of stuff out. I’ve been training a lot and doing all sorts of exercises.”
