from Pitchfork
Scarlett Johansson's debut LP-- Anywhere I Lay My Head, a collection of 10 Tom Waits covers and one original cut-- is a weird, druggy homage to the Louisiana bayou, produced by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek and featuring guest performances by Nick Zinner and David Bowie. Pitchfork spoke to Johansson about road trips, being taken seriously as a singer, and her decision to tackle one of the most iconic vocalists of the past half-century.

The Inquisition - Scarlett Johansson |

from Spin / by David Marchese
Onscreen, Scarlett Johansson has beguiled Bill Murray, Christian Bale, Ewan McGregor, and ... Woody Allen. Offscreen, she's been the face of L'Oreal and Louis Vuitton. So given this A-lister's tony image, it came as a bit of a surprise that her debut disc would be a collection of obscurities by the ever-rumpled Tom Waits (plus on original). But in the chicken-and-waffles spirit of counterintuitive combos, producer Dave Sitek, of TV on the Radio, drenches Waits' barroom laments in woozy sonics, while Johansson adds her own world-weary, Nico-esque vocals. Since her only prior experience seemed to be singing backup for the Jesus and Mary Chain at last year's Coachella, we were as skeptical as anyone, but Anywhere I Lay My Head (Atco/Rhino) was always inteded to be more than a mere brand extension. "This is not a pop album; it isn't about to get remixed into European trance," says the 23-year-old New Yorker, who can spot a Waits reference from a mile away. "I wasn't going to put out something that didn't justify itself musically."

Scarlett Johansson is talking about ambition. Somehow, interviews with Johansson always seem to curl back into this subject; even at 18, when she was first fielding tables full of journalists at junkets, she was startlingly sure of herself and her place in the world, entirely free of the nervous fragility expected of emergent starlets. She is now 23. "I feel like a powerful woman," she says, musingly. "For sure. A powerful, modern woman." There is no reason to doubt her.

The Other Boleyn Girl: Natalie vs Scarlett! |
• Date: 2008/02/19
• Category: Internet Interviews
from ComingSoon.net Clearly, one of the best things going for Justin Chadwick's period drama The Other Boleyn Girl, based on the novel by Philippa Gregory, is that it stars two of the most in demand young starlets working today, Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, appearing together for the first time. Adapted by Peter (The Queen) Morgan, the film follows the story of the two Boleyn sisters, Portman as the practical and worldly Anne and Johannson as her naïve younger sister Mary, who is given the task of charming the current king of England, Henry Tudor aka Henry the VIII (Eric Bana), and getting him to marry her to improve their family's status. Over the course of the next few years, both sisters vie for the affections of the already-married king, ultimately leading to misery, despair and death for their entire family.

from USA Today You might think Natalie Portman is far too amiable a person to play notorious British queen Anne Boleyn.
You'd be wrong.

Interview: Natalie Portman And Scarlett Johansson |
• Date: 2008/02/15
• Category: Internet Interviews
from Cinema Blend A profile in W Magazine recently suggested that it's hard to find a guy with a crush on both Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman. After asking everyone I know, I've confirmed that that's an insane thing to say: everyone has a crush on both of them. So it was probably some journalists' dream come true when they both sat down to talk about their latest film The Other Boleyn Girl, in which they play two siblings fighting for the affections of one man: The King of England, Henry VIII.
